THE MISSION

The mission was to design a framework for the tech company's future R&D leaders, aiming to enhance their ability to lead themselves in a complex and rapidly evolving organization.

The solution should:

  1. Be integrated into the company's existing leadership program for future R&D leaders (10 months long)

  2. Focus on self-leadership and deepen learning

  3. Reinforce learning and relationships between the leaders.

We have collaborated on four iterations of the program since 2019.

THE SOLUTION

 

When we developed our part in the tech company's R&D leadership program, we used three fundamental design principles:

  • Create psychological safety to foster courage

  • Design for action and reflection to strengthen learning

  • Promote ownership for development with clear intention

Together with the company's HR/L&D team, we designed the first module that laid the foundation for the entire journey. This involved a hybrid model with inclusive online sessions, individual tasks, learning group meetings, and a two-day physical meetup. The purpose was to create a shared platform and increase self-awareness, ownership, and motivation among the leaders for their personal and professional development.

After this first module, Colearn coached the leaders in smaller learning groups between each module (which were delivered by the company). Through the coaching and with support from a digital tool developed by Colearn, the leaders had the opportunity to create their own development journey. Here, they gathered their reflections, insights about their motivation, ongoing actions towards their development, and gave each other encouragement and feedback.

The program ended with a wrap-up session where the leaders were able to summarize the learnings and celebrate the journey in a powerful way. The purpose was to create clarity and engagement around how the leaders wanted to take the lessons forward, both individually and as a group, and within the company as an organization.
